A Joint Meeting of the Russian and SA Chapters of the Russia-South Africa Business Council will be held in July29.05.2023On May 29, a meeting of the Russia-South Africa Business Council was held at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation. The event was moderated by Pavel Yakovlev, Chairman of the Russian Chapter of the Russia-South Africa Business Council, Director General of JSC Ural. Vladimir Padalko, the Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, delivered a welcoming speech and supported the proposal of the Russia-South Africa Business Council to hold a joint meeting with the participation of members of the delegation of South African entrepreneurs as part of the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum, which will be held in Saint Petersburg from 26 to 29 of July. Vladimir Padalko also spoke about other aspects of the preparations for the Russia-Africa summit and about the participation of the Chamber delegation in the BRICS Business Forum scheduled for August in Johannesburg (South Africa). Pavel Yakovlev spoke about the work plans of the Business Council for the coming period and holding a joint meeting of the Russian and South African parts of the Russia-South Africa Business Council within the Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum. He invited all participants to take part in this meeting, which will be held on one of the days of the forum at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of St. Petersburg. Various aspects of trade and economic cooperation with South Africa, taking into account the agreements reached at a meeting of the intergovernmental commission of the two countries in March 2023, were presented by Emil Kuliev, head of the African countries section of the Department for the Development of Bilateral Cooperation of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia. In his speech, he expressed the hope that the activation of the Russian part of the business council would bring practical results in terms of establishing cooperation between the business circles of Russia and South Africa, and that the chairman of the South African part of the business council would be appointed as soon as possible. Issues of business cooperation in the field of trade, energy and transport were considered at the meeting of the intergovernmental commission held in March, E. Kuliyev said. The intergovernmental commission also discussed the issue of launching the BRICS geological platform, the launch of which will allow the development of mining technologies. The Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in South Africa, Maxim Bureev, in his video conference speech, said that "now is the time for unconventional decisions" that could change the direction of transport corridors of trade with South Africa. The trade representative also presented the features of the work of Russian business with the banking sector of South Africa and named the figure of trade with this country, which in 2022 amounted to $1 billion 326 million. The participants of the meeting agreed on the importance of personal contacts with business representatives of the Republic of South Africa. Dmitry Piskulov, director for international projects of the Moscow Exchange, spoke about the prospects for settlements in national currencies with South Africa and the possibility of converting the rand and the ruble. He said that Russian banks are not able to open correspondent accounts with large South African banks. The possibility of opening such accounts with government support is key, he said, because political authorities, as he put it, must send a signal to grassroots structures. In his closing remarks, Pavel Yakovlev reminded the council members of the need to send proposals to the plan of work with the South African part of the Business Council by June 15. Russia and South Africa will continue to develop mutually beneficial business cooperation30.03.2023The 17th session of the South Africa- Russia Intergovernmental Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) was held in the South African capital of Pretoria. The Russian delegation was headed by the Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia Alexander Kozlov, the South African delegation - by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa Naledi Pandor. Ahead of the meeting, representatives of Russian ministries and departments, the Russia-South Africa Business Council, who took part in the work of the joint intergovernmental committee, held three-day talks with South African partners on a wide range of issues on the bilateral agenda. In the course of the talks special attention was paid to the need to increase mutual trade, diversify the export and import nomenclature, as well as jointly remove barriers to the development of constructive and mutually beneficial business cooperation. Expansion of trade and economic relations with South Africa has traditionally been one of Russia's priorities on the African continent. According to the results of 2022 year, South Africa is the second largest trading partner of Russia among the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the impact of the pandemic and Western sanctions, there is a positive trend in economic relations between the two countries: the mutual trade turnover increased by 16.4%. The growth in trade was due to an increase in Russian exports of wheat, fertilizers and coal. Purchases of manganese ore, platinum, citrus fruits and fresh fruit from South Africa have also increased. Russia and South Africa cooperate effectively within the framework of the Joint Intergovernmental Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation and multilaterally, in particular within the BRICS, which South Africa chairs in 2023. In the course of the meeting the parties confirmed their mutual willingness to develop cooperation in a wide range of areas, including industry, geology, energy, agriculture, information and communication technologies, science and education. On the sidelines of the meeting the Russia-South Africa Business Council held a business breakfast with Russian and South African partners, where they agreed to maintain a high level of cooperation between the two countries both in bilateral and multilateral formats, taking into account the South African BRICS presidency this year and the Russian presidency in this organization in 2024. Meeting of the Russia-South Africa Business Council10.06.2022On June 10, a meeting of the Russia-South Africa Business Council was held at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation. Vice President of the Chamber Maxim Fateev and Russian Ambassador to South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho Ilya Rogachev delivered a welcoming speech. In his speech, Maxim Fateev noted that the Republic of South Africa is traditionally one of the five largest trading partners of Russia among African countries. At the end of 2021, the trade turnover between the two countries amounted to $1.14 billion. Despite the current difficult international situation, Russia and South Africa have every opportunity to fulfill the potential of bilateral cooperation, primarily in such areas as energy, processing and transportation of hydrocarbons, and information technology. “The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation receives a lot of requests from regional businesses interested in establishing contacts with African entrepreneurs. Moreover, the main problem is the lack of up-to-date information about markets, potential counterparties, local legislation,” Maxim Fateev emphasized. The Chamber is ready to contribute to the organization of bilateral business meetings at the sites of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to facilitate business missions and exhibition events on the basis of the subsidiaries of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation - Expocentre and WTC. Ilya Rogachev drew attention to the global shifts in world trade caused by the tough sanctions regime against Russia. In this situation, South African entrepreneurs have a unique opportunity to significantly intensify trade and economic cooperation with the Russian Federation. “Seize the moment - establish direct deliveries of goods from Russia, primarily food and oil products. These positions, as you know, are in great demand in the country's market,” Ilya Rogachev emphasized. Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in South Africa Maxim Bureev spoke about the peculiarities of doing business in South Africa. According to him, business in African countries is still built primarily on personal contacts. Therefore, building a business at a distance simply will not work - you have to come, get to know each other, and negotiate long-term relationships. In addition, the South African market has changed markedly, it is necessary not only to deliver the goods, but also to establish a “end-to-end customer service”. And for this you need to build relationships with local entrepreneurs. The meeting of the Russia-South Africa Business Council was attended by South African Ambassador to Russia Mzuvukile Maketuka, head of the royal house of Kei Koran Khobaha Melvin Arendse, as well as representatives of Russian and South African companies. Summing up the results of the meeting, Pavel Yakovlev, Chairman of the Russia-South Africa Business Council, Director General of AZ Ural, noted that several appeals to federal authorities would be prepared on issues that hinder cooperation between the two countries. Heads of Business Councils with African Countries Analyzed the Trade Relations06.04.2022On April 6, a meeting with the heads of Business councils for cooperation with African countries took place at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Russia. Pavel Yakovlev, Director General of AZ URAL JSC, Chairman of the Russia-South Africa Business Council, took part in the event. The African market is competitive and complex, Russian business needs to work thoroughly and systematically in it in order to achieve success, President of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Sergey Katyrin emphasized. According to him, now Russia lives in fundamentally new economic realities, supply chains have been disrupted, many ties have been broken, logistics have been disrupted, and businesses are forced to adjust their strategies for working with foreign partners and look for new development opportunities. The logical solution, the head of the Chamber is convinced, could be the development of cooperation in friendly countries, in particular, on the African continent. Recently, the Chamber received a lot of requests from the territorial chambers regarding the opportunities for developing trade and economic relations of small and medium-sized businesses with Africa, Sergey Katyrin emphasized. At the same time, he noted, today's Africa requires new approaches to work from business, and from the state - long-term programs to support entrepreneurship and foreign economic activity. Chairman of the Coordinating Committee for Economic Cooperation with African Countries (AFROCOM), member of the Federation Council Igor Morozov spoke about the organization's work and plans. Thus, the AFROCOM website has been created, with the help of which businesses can navigate African realities, find a niche for their work, learn about the conditions for entering certain markets. The organization opens its offices in African countries, and in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), where the headquarters of the African Union is located, a continental office of AFROCOM has been opened. In Africa today there is a great demand for IT technologies, and this must be borne in mind. Companies can turn around there, create their own digital platforms and work successfully. There are many technology parks on the continent, for example, there are ten of them in Ethiopia alone; they offer significant benefits. Igor Morozov noted that it is necessary to create a Russia-Africa trading house, through which Russian firms could more successfully enter African markets. We really need a specialized investment fund to support entrepreneurs. In general, if we work seriously and with the prospect of working with African partners for many years, more serious state support is needed, Igor Morozov concluded. Sergey Katyrin summed up the results, noting that Africa is an extremely interesting and important field of activity for business, and the authorities should prepare and consolidate into one document the proposals of business councils supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation. The meeting was attended by AFROCOM Executive Director Stanislav Mezentsev. Director of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Irina Abramova addressed the forum participants with a greeting, recalling the 120-year history of Russia's relations with Ethiopia, which have never been built on the basis of unilateral gain or colonial conquests. According to the scientist, Russia is, as she put it, in the same boat with the countries of Africa and "we should join forces for sustainable development." Ms.Abramova expressed hope that before the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled for 2022, a joint Russia-Ethiopian biological center will be founded. “The upcoming 2nd Russia-Africa summit will be an event to which we must come with concrete results,” Ms. Abramova noted. The head of the Afrika Institute said that Africa is a promising market for Russia, in which it is important not to lose its positions, to maintain cooperation in the field of technology along with agriculture. Ethiopia is a young, but large and densely populated country, where 60 percent of the population is under 25, Abramova said. "These countries are the key to the discovery of the African continent," the Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences believes. Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Yevgeny Terekhin, participating in the forum via videoconference, noted the positive changes taking place in this country, the growing investment attractiveness. Russian Ambassador to Djibouti Mikhail Golovanov drew the attention of the forum participants to the attractiveness of this country in terms of its geopolitical position. He pointed out that 12 per cent of the world's maritime traffic takes place through the ports of Djibouti. Every year this country receives 33 thousand ships and provides ample opportunities for operators. The country has created good conditions for business activities, built high-tech offices and warehouses, built the first fully electrified railway in Africa with a length of 750 kilometers, which connects Djibouti and Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Ethiopian Ambassador to Russia Alemayehu Tegenu thanked AFROCOM for its support and cooperation and expressed hope for further joint work.
